We found Firkin Point, Loch Lomond a year or so ago when we were looking for somewhere to stop and stretch our legs while traveling north. Sitting on the west bank of Loch Lomond about halfway between Inverbeg and Tarbet on the A82 this is an ideal place to take a break from driving and have a breather. (Map) Clearly sign-posted from the main road simply follow the tarmac road down to the car park, which is free. There is a little visitor centre, loos for humans (including a disabled loo), and poo bins for canines. There isn’t anywhere to buy refreshments, but if you are organized enough to have supplies with you it really is a lovely place to stop for a cuppa as there are picnic tables positioned here and there. In fact because there aren’t lots of facilities it is much quieter than nearby Luss, which whilst it is beautiful, gets stuffed full of coachloads of people.
Once you are out of the car it is pretty obvious which way to go to get to the water’s edge, and the view that greets you is quite breath-taking as you find yourself looking right down Loch Lomond towards mountains that seem to wrap themselves around you. There is actually a ‘proper’ walk that starts from the car park and picnic site, and it is possible to go for three miles north or south on a level surfaced path: this is a lovely lochside walk with stunning views of Loch Lomond and it is ideal for wheelchairs, pushchairs and the like. However we prefer to wander down to the shore and pick our way over the little rivulets that make their way down from the mountains and across the beach to the loch, paddling in the crystal clear water. If you duck under the lower boughs of the trees to your right (when facing the water) you’ll come to the gnarly old tree…he is a bit of a favourite of ours (we’re a bit obsessed with trees…)
Generally speaking we find that most of the car parks in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park are in good condition with more than presentable public loos. Worth knowing when you’re on a road trip…
